the paradox

My brother came for a visit from New York (to Texas) He showed me this and I told him, “I have to post this.” It has been circulated for quite some time but I have never read it and felt that others may not have read this as well. It basically hits the nail on the head with a hammered view. …….Thanks Alan!

AFTER THE DEATH OF HIS WIFE!

A wonderful Message by George Carlin:

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less; we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time.

We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom. We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.

We’ve learned how to make a living, but not a life. We’ve added years to life not life to years. We’ve been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space.

We’ve done larger things, but not better things. We’ve cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We’ve conquered the atom, but not our prejudice.

We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less.

We’ve learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes.

These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill.

It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete.

Remember; spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever. Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side.

Remember to give a warm hug to the one next to you because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn’t cost a cent. Remember, to say, “I love you” to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it.

A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you. Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again. Give time to love, give time to speak and give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.

  1. I have read this before several times and never tire to it. It is profound in every sense. Thank you for sharing it.

  2. This is so clever and, unfortunately, so true.

  3. Thanks Art you have a quality day too!

  4. I love George Carlin. He’s one of my favorite comedians. He’s passed now I believe. Very outspoken guy … :) I used to laugh SO HARD when he was on stage. He was the kinda guy who just said what he thought on everything and anything … you’d sit and watch him with surprise because he’d touch on topics in the funniest ways.

  5. I have read this before Art, but I re-read every word again because I think we should remember them well……….. ~Peace and Gratitude

  6. Love To You Art – Never had read this story ——- REALITY IS ……
    MUCH LOVE XXCAT

  7. Quite an eye-opener, isn’t it?

  8. Art, the Dalai Lama ending with “Much in the window but empty rooms inside” just punched me right in the gut to pound home this whole post! I absolutely must stop apologizing for living in opposition to this societal “norm”! Bless you for ongoing support and inspiration and instruction.

  9. This is super. While I agree that we have gone backward on many things, we have also made some progress, too. We must not forget that.

We don’t litter as much as before. We are also more accepting of diversity among people. Social media and the Internet (while they definitely have some major drawbacks) allow us to connect with people like you whom we would have never otherwise come in contact with.

There is hope for the human race. :) Thank you so much for making us stop, think and slow down. Great blog. I love it.

  10. Thanks for posting. Of course, I am very confused to what is written by Dalai Lama and George Carlin. Carlin is a very brilliant man, but not a plagarist. Guess I need to just emrbace the message and not get caught up in who was the real author. :-)

  11. George Carlin…..It just proves you can’t judge a book by it’s cover. Beautiful….positively beautiful.

  13. We throw away our time on useless things just like we throw away our money. All our conveniences were made to save us time. Time for what? Sometimes it feels like we’re all in a big fat hurry to get nowhere! People honking the nansecond the light turns green (at me usually haha)! I feel sorry for the state of mind of those people. It will all be over so soon!
